Immigration & Residential Tenancies Disputes

For people who are not a Canadian citizen or on PR, there can be a lot of uncertainty about whether or not a Residential Tenancies dispute can affect your status in the country.

Residential Tenancies disputes have no impact on immigration or refugee status. Someone’s status or visa cannot be revoked because they took their landlord to the tenancy board, were evicted, or missed rent payments.

One exception to this is people whose visa is directly tied to their housing situation (e.g. people on closed work permits who get housing as a condition of their employment, like superintendents).
